Local Golf Courses
Golf was one of the major attractions that brought Edward VII to the area - hence the name of the 'Royal' Cromer Golf Club. And what's good enough for royalty...
Visitors to the area today are spoiled for choice, especially if you extend the area to include Norwich; and what golfer considers 20 miles to be any great problem if it means experiencing a new course?Royal Cromer Golf Club

Set between Cromer and Overstrand, 320 feet above Cromer's beaches the Royal Cromer Golf Club was officially opened 1st Jan 1888. The future King Edward V11 was a founder member and had conferred Royal Patronage upon the club a few days earlier on Christmas Day 1887. It is a great cliff top Links style course and from every hole at some point the sea comes into view. One of its many endearing and for some frustrating features is that it rarely plays the same from morning to afternoon. It is also a great course to play in wintertime, and because of it great drainage very rarely has more than one or two temporary greens in the worst of weather conditions. Sheringham Golf Club

A mere four miles away, also set on the cliffs overlooking the North Sea you will find another great cliff top Links styled course, this time belonging to the Sheringham Golf Club. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it officially opened as a 9 hole course in 1891 and was extended to 18 holes in July 1898 with a Professional tournament. Players included greats such as Harry Vardon and James Braid and the winner was the Great J.H.Taylor. The course has been the venue for 3 English Ladies' Championships. www.sheringhamgolfclub.co.uk.

Royal Norwich Golf Club

With Sandringham situated in the county it is probably not surprising to find another 'Royal' course in the area, although this one is not a coastal links. The Royal Norwich officially opened in 1893. The then Duke of York was a founder member and conferred the Royal Patronage on the club with the club badge and logo incorporating the white rose of York. A truly great parkland course with slick greens and excellent drainage that is playable all year round. Redesigned by James Baird in 1924 the course has changed very little since that time and in its history has also hosted the Martini Cup. A recent review describes the Royal Norwich as a, "Much improved course over the last few years the bunkers are filled with American white dust sand the greens are very quick and true, the best course in the county by far". www.royalnorwichgolf.co.uk.

Weston Park Golf Club

Again demonstrating the versatility of the county, nine miles north-west of Norwich off the A1067, this course is described as a "High quality parkland course in the idyllic surroundings of beautiful Weston Park. Fine course for winter play". It was designed to incorporate and enhance the natural features of Weston Park, with care taken to protect and maintain the surrounding woodland and trees. The greens and tees blend harmoniously into the undulating parkland landscape, providing scenic views of the countryside. The high quality course produced in these idyllic surroundings has 18 holes in individual settings, each presenting golfers with a different challenge to test and develop their skills. Year round play is virtually assured by the quality of the course construction and the natural advantages of the site. www.weston-park.co.uk.
These are just four of the county's golf courses. For those who relish a new challenge every day, there is no shortage of others
